With the weather starting out as cold and windy and rainy early in the morning, the day turned out fairly well. It quit misting about 8:00 AM, but remained cloudy until mid afternoon. Then the sun started to peek out. We didn't have the number of people that we had hoped for (or even expected), but it was a pretty good day, over all. Tangled Roots started their concert at 7:00 PM; they took a short break at about 8:00 PM; when they turned around to look to the west, they saw a huge black wall of clouds and rain, very close, and approaching. As they turned back to the people and the stage area, a huge gust of wind bellowed the 100' by 40' tent; to their amazement, all the people, instead of leaving, rushed someplace to help out...hold the tents down, collect T-shirts being sold, help elderly people to shelter, etc. They were truly amazed! One of them said “…in the Cities, you'd NEVER see that happening! People would all just leave!” After about 45 minutes or so, the wind and rain died down, and most of the things were secured, so Tangled Roots continued their concert in our tasting room.
Comments from some who attended include:
“…we were a little leery about the weather at first, but then just decided to come out anyway. We are sure glad we did! We really enjoyed the tour of the vineyard. We learned a lot about growing grapes here in North Dakota…heck, we didn’t even know you could grow grapes here before!”
“…we came out to see the Grape Stomp! It was GREAT! Next year we are going to sign up for the competition. It looked like a lot of fun!”
“…we had to see what all this grape-growing was all about. We didn’t even know that grapes could be grown in North Dakota. Wow! Were we impressed?”
“…we really didn’t know what to expect when we came out here. We figured this might be just another small town event. Boy were we wrong! And surprised! The Trivia Show was very good. The Granary Girls were great! The fact that Tangled Roots stuck around, even after the storm passed through was really impressive! We plan to come again next year!”
I think everyone had a great time. Even though all our goals might not have been met, mainly due to the weather, one of them was; we had said that one of our goals was to have those that did attend leave with the thought "I'm sure glad I came. I'll be back next year." and for those they talked to who didn't attend "I wish I would have gone."
